LESSON 5

THEME: The sevenfold gift of the Spirit

1.   Show them how the sacraments are signs of God’s life and love to us at different stages of our life. We are the body of Christ and the body is looked after by Christ who shows us these different signs of life and love which we call the sacraments. Sacraments mean signs. They make us holy.

a)   Soon after our birth we are born into God’s family and He calls us “son”. This happens in the Sacrament of Baptism.

b)   When we are old enough He gives us His Spirit in a special way so that we can truly be His witnesses and make a choice for ourselves to want to be His followers and to be Christians. This is called Confirmation.

c)    When we are able to distinguish ordinary bread from the Body of Christ, we receive His love and power in the Eucharist which feeds our spiritual life.

d)   We, being human, offend Him even though we know what is wrong and right and He forgives us. This is the Sacrament of Reconciliation.

e)   When we grow up some of us may want to marry nand raise a family if God wishes. For this there is the Sacrament of Matrimony.

f)     For the sake of ministering to the body of Christ on earth, Christ calls certain men (/women) exclusively to his service and gives them the help of his Spirit. For this there is the Sacrament of Orders. Through this Sacrament God shows His care and concern for His people.

g)   Lastly when we are sick and therefore we meet our God, He strengthens us in a special way and comforts us too. This sacrament is called the Anointing of the Sick.
