Baptism, Confirmation and the Eucharist are

Called the Sacraments of Christian Initiation.

Baptism MAMES our union with Jesus Christ,

Confirmation STRENGTHENS it, and the

Eucharist CONTINUES TO COMPLETE it.

*223. What is Baptism?

Baptism is the Sacrament

by which Jesus Christ

makes us Christians.+

must first he received into the visible community

(see 150) of the Catholic Church before receiving

other Sacraments (except Marriage).

*224. What does the priest do

at a Baptism?

At a Baptism, the priest+

pours++ water on the person’s head,

saying+++: “I baptise you

in the name of the Father,

and of the Son,

and of the Holy Spirit.”

+Or deacon. In emergencies, a lay person or even

someone not baptized himself should give Baptism,

as above. The Christian name of a saint is used to

address the person being baptized.

++Or immerses – see the rite of Baptism for

Children. The word “baptism” mean “wash”.

+++The words and the pouring of water together

make the sign of this Sacrament: a spiritual

washing and a spiritual life-giving. See 194 and

footnote.

the Sacrament of Baptism do to us?

The \sacrament of Baptism

gives us sanctifying grace+

and forgives all sin,
