SERAPHIM PRAYER BOOK
THE CALLING
We meet the eyes
of mercy and compassion in this Icon; often we think of mercy as a forgiveness
of sin, compassion as not taking revenge or bearing a grudge. But in these
eyes, I see the mercy which is the indulgence of our gifts and talents;
something we are born to be good at, something we do not deserve to possess.
From a
distance, the eyes look "calling", and I respond: Lord, bid me come
to you. Looking at it closely, I see and understand deeper the word of Julian
of Norwich, saying, it is a joy and a bliss for me to suffer for you, and if
you need more for your satisfaction, I am willing to suffer more.
The radiance
of the face, hair and garment is the uncreated light shining from within. We
are made in the image of God and called to the likeness of Christ; following in
His footsteps we will be like God, which is our ultimate destiny.
Whatever
hurts, whatever challenges our life, let our hearts hear the tight lips of Him
saying: "I Am - The Being", the beginning and the end of my soul,
body and mind. Icons often have little half bottom ears showing, indicating
that "I am listening". So let us come before an Icon, trusting that
He will hear us if we persist in prayer.
The Hebrew
characters "OWN" stand for The Being, i.e. I Am Who Am, I Am The
Being, or The Name of God.
