PENITENTIAL RITE |
Invitation
The celebrant invites the people to call their sins to mind, and to
repent for them. He may use the following, or similar words:
Priest: My brothers and sisters*, to prepare
ourselves to celebrate the sacred mysteries, let us call to mind our sins.
A pause for silent reflection follows. After the silence, one of the
following three forms of the penitential rite is chosen:
All: I confess to almighty God, and you, my brothers and sisters, that I
have sinned through my own fault
(All
strike their breast)
in my thoughts and in my
words, in what I have done, and in what I have failed to do; and I ask blessed
Mary, ever virgin, all the angels and saints, and you, my brothers and sisters,
to pray for me to the Lord our God.
Priest: May almighty God have mercy on us, forgive us our
sins,
and bring us to everlasting
life.
People: Amen.
*Other words such as “my dear people, friends, dearly
beloved, brethren,” may be used here and in similar places in the liturgy.
