Readings for Chinese New Year

Entrance Antiphon: Lord, you will crown the year with your goodness, to you we give thanks and praise.

Opening Prayer: Almighty God, with you there is no beginning and no end, for you are the origin and goal of all creation. May this New Year which we dedicate to you bring us abundant prosperity and growth in holy living. We ask this through Our Lord Jesus Christ, your son, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit,one God for ever and ever. Amen.

Reading 1
Nm 6:22-27
The LORD said to Moses:
“Speak to Aaron and his sons and tell them:
This is how you shall bless the Israelites.
Say to them:
The LORD bless you and keep you!
The LORD let his face shine upon
you, and be gracious to you!
The LORD look upon you kindly and
give you peace!
So shall they invoke my name upon the Israelites, and I will bless them.”

Responsorial Psalm
Ps 67:2-3, 5, 6, 8

May God bless us in his mercy.
May God have pity on us and bless us;
   may he let his face shine upon us.
So may your way be known upon earth;
   among all nations, your salvation.
May God bless us in his mercy.
May the nations be glad and exult
   because you rule the peoples in equity;
   the nations on the earth you guide.
May God bless us in his mercy.
May the peoples praise you, O God;
   may all the peoples praise you!
May God bless us,
   and may all the ends of the earth fear him!

May God bless us in his mercy.

Reading II
Jam 4:13-15
Come now, you who say, "Today or tomorrow

we shall go into such and such a town,

spend a year there doing business, and make a profit"--

you have no idea what your life will be like tomorrow.

You are a puff of smoke that appears briefly and then disappears.

Instead you should say,

"If the Lord wills it, we shall live to do this or that."

Gospel
Mt 6:31-34

So do not worry and say, 'What are we to eat?'

or 'What are we to drink?'

or 'What are we to wear?'

All these things the pagans seek.

Your heavenly Father knows that you need them all.

But seek first the kingdom (of God) and his righteousness,

and all these things will be given you besides.

Do not worry about tomorrow;

tomorrow will take care of itself.

Sufficient for a day is its own evil.

BLESSING OF ORANGES

Priest: Our help is in the Name of the Lord.

People: Who made heaven and earth.

Priest: O Lord, hear our prayers.

People: And let our cries come unto you.

Priest: The Lord be with you.

People: And also with you.

Priest: Let us pray, O Lord; we offer you today oranges, because of their sweetness and golden colour, they have become for us the symbol of prosperity and happiness. In our home the offering of this fruit has also become a sign of kindness and good wishes. In your goodness, pour down your BLESSING + upon these oranges which you have created. Grant that by this invocation of your Holy Name, all of us, who will partake of them, may receive the health of body and protection of soul, be prosperous in all kinds of good works and the practice of Christian virtues. Let us feel in our hearts the sweetness of your love for us: through the same Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.

People: Amen.
