1. In the words of the Tuah Kampung, Jawa ak Gawan, self-appointed Chairman of JKKK Kpg. Kudei Lama, "all the 152 families of his Kampung are poor". They all live in poor and unhygienic conditions. The village is subjected to frequent floods and the ground muddy and wet. The walkways are in bad shape. Each family is earning averagely RM500 a month, if they are the lucky ones. The less-lucky ones earn less than RM400 a month. The residents are much subjected to diseases and red-eyes are not uncommon.

2. Irene and family - with a sister Jessica away in Balai Ringin, a brother Alex and a baby Iriyana, without a father and mother, is worse off compared with 95% of the poor in Kpg. Kudei Lama.  She can easily fall into the worst 5% hard-cored poor among the families in Kpg. Kudei. her take-home pay after deducting her EPF contribution RM60. repaying RM100 for the loan she took from her boss for mother's burial, is left with RM340. She has to pay RM100 for her baby-sitter, RM50 for the baby milk-powder, RM60 for transportation to & return from work, feeding herself in town RM120 and Alex (Tambi) 's food RM60. Now Alex is going to school and he requires greater expenses. As she has to care and mind her baby and Alex in the morning and wait for Alex return from school at 1.00 pm, she works in the evening/night shift. She completes her work at 10.00 pm before starting to get ready for home. She goes to work by van and goes home by motor bike ridden by her uncle/adopted father, costing her RM60. At this stage, she said, "I cannot afford not to work, much as I love to stay at home to care for my daughter and Tambi".

3. The photos show the poor conditions Irene and her family are staying in their dilapidated house 12ft by 12ft, with a small kitchen and bath-room, outside. The inside of the house tells a story. The roofs leaked and now about to be repaired when the weather is better. The walls and floors were of poor conditions. The floors had been fixed with plywood boards laid over the old floor. The walkways to her house is real bad. Despite the poor conditions and the struggle, Irene remains a simple person - with good conduct, unselfish and sincere. She is uneducated, never been to school at all. (The photos of Irene with her daughter Iriyana were taken at her Uncle Tuka's house. The uncle's house is bigger and better. The pictures of the house shown and inside the room is Irene's house.)

Cheers.

Fabian.
