a day and more than a year of abuse, teen maid finally freed

KUCHING: Given only RM100 a month and one
meal a day for more than a year, a maid suffered further humiliation when she
was repeatedly abused.
Chai
Chun Mie, 17, from Bako was
too weak to even thank her father for saving her from the hellish double-storey terraced house in Jalan
Airport here.
The house belongs to an engineer whose
mother, aged in her 70s, was the abuser. Her standard “torture tools” ranged
from a walking stick, an empty glass, a knife handle, fingernails and fingers.
safe hands: Chun Mie, looking frail and weak, in
the company of a police officer.
Chun Mie arrived at the Simpang
Tiga police station yesterday all bruised, scratched
and swollen.
She had to limp up the staircase to meet the
investigating officer, shocking everyone in the station and asking how another
human being could inflict such a horrendous treatment on another.
After a statement was taken from Chun Mie,
she was brought to the Sarawak General Hospital.
According to her father, Chai Jee Teng, who
is a rubber tapper, this was not the first time that his daugther
was mistreated by her employer.
“It was bad last time but this time is the
worst. I only met my daughter twice this year, in February and October, but
each time, I was only given half an hour to talk with her.”
“My daughter would give all her pay, which is
RM100 a month, to me and that was all she got. She was very skinny and she
never related any of the ordeal to me when I asked,”
said Teng, 58.
He told reporters that his daughter got the
job from a welfare association, to take care of the senior citizen.
She started work in December last year.
Teng tried to call his daughter’s employer
recently but could not get through, so he decided to go to the house at around
10am yesterday.
Chun Mie told police that her employer’s
mother would accuse her of being lazy and slow. Each time her employer’s mother
bawled at her, the abuse would start.
“Sometimes, she would scratch me with her
fingernails or bash me with an empty glass. I still remember she used the
handle of a knife to hit me all over. Hitting me with a walking stick was
normal as my employer’s mother depended on it to get around.”
“I was also beaten just because a piece of
bread was eaten. I did not eat it, and when I told my employer’s mother, she
still beat me,” cried Chun Mie.
The hapless girl was given a mattress to
sleep on in her employer’s mother’s room previously but recently, she was asked
to sleep on the floor without the mattress. She worked from 4am until 10pm everyday and was given only a meal a day.
The Star was made to understand that police
had gone to the house of the suspect, but she was not in.
At press time, the police were still waiting for the
suspect to show up.
