Recognising Christ in suffering communities
Dear Friends
Shalom...It has been a heart
wrenching experience to visit Rebecca at the SGH yesterday (Sunday 16 Dec
2012). Her world seems to be collapsing around her with her poor health
as well as of her husband’s. We could see the suffering Christ in them.
Will we help to dry the tears of this family in crisis? … when all else seems hopeless and in despair… are we willing
to lend a helping hand?
Below is a simple write up
of this family in need.
Let us continue to offer our
prayers and consolation to this family.
United in prayers and love.

Kuching,
December 2012.
Jung Siew Hung also known as Rebecca, a 47 year old mother to two children aged 17 (Form 5) yrs and 15 (Form 3).
Her eldest daughter, Kimberly Jiew has completed her Form 5. The younger boy, Bryan Jiew
has finished his PMR exam recently. Both are studying at SMK Tun Abdul Razak (formerly Dragon School), 24th Mile (KM 38) Kuching-Serian road. Her
husband, Joseph Jiew
works as an odd job labourer at BDC parish.
Rebecca Jung is starting her first chemotherapy
today (17.12.12) at the SGH to shrink the tumour in her womb.
The doctor is supposed to operate on her on 11.12.12
but was unable to do so owing to the size of the cancerous
growth. As she lay on the
hospital bed, she cries for herself and her children. Both of her children,
have expressed that they wish to stop their studies and to find work to support
the family. Her husband, Joseph Jiew
is having heart problem
and recently diagnosed to have leukaemia. Joseph
shared that he prayed to the Lord every night and surrender everything to
Him. The whole family
are Catholic. Joseph informed that his good friend, a
teacher, is helping him to apply for the government welfare aid and they are in
the process of getting the document done.
Rebecca Jung, 47, cancerous tumour in her womb. Husband Joseph Jiew, leukaemia.
In the meantime, we as a community of Christians,
we can only help through our prayers and our little contribution. We do not know what holds tomorrow for
Rebecca and family, God only wants us to be faithful in little things.
Joseph Jiew is currently
taking turns with her daughter, Kimberly
to look after Rebecca in the
hospital. Rebecca is taking liquid food given by the hospital as her stomach
feels bloated after taking solid food.
Those who wish to lend a helping hand can contact Kimberly
Jiew at 010-964 8337. Their residence address: No.395

Friends,
Lent begins
on Ash Wednesday 13 Feb 2013, during Lent DMA is organizing a WOM Visit (Work of Mercy Visit) to Rebecca Jung and family, you may like
to join us to make your Lenten preparation for the Passion and Resurrection of
Christ more meaningful. We recall previous years’ Lenten visit were really
tremendous experience for all when in 2011 we visited Bettie
Sidi in heavy rain and broke her hut as we were
leaving!! (20/3/11) Her baby should be two years older now. Last year we
visited Nelson
anak Michael with Sr Annette Kueh, SSFS (4/3/12).
Sister Annette was so moved she shed tears publicly.
How Beautiful Are The
Feet Of Those Who Bring Good News - Isaiah 52:7
Fr Henri Nouwen says
Consolation is a beautiful word.
It means “to be
with” (con)
“the lonely one” (solus).
To offer consolation
is one of the most important ways to care.
Life is so full of pain, sadness and loneliness that
we often wonder what we can do to alleviate the immense suffering we see.
We can and must offer consolation. We can and must
console the mother who lost her child, the young person with Aids, the family
whose house burned down, the soldier who was wounded, the teenager who
contemplates suicide, the old man who wonders why he
should stay alive.
To console
does not mean to take away the pain but rather to be there and say: “You
are not alone, I am with you. Together
we can carry the burden. Don’t be
afraid. I am here.” That is consolation.
We all need to
give as well as to receive it.
