Destitute: lacking possessions and resources; especially suffering extreme poverty.
Gawai 2013
Dear Friends,
Every year DMA organises 2 Work of Mercy (WOM) visits to some poor and
needy families, during Lent and Advent. This year we made extra WOM visits when
we visited Kapit (19-21 April 2013). All our previous
visits are recorded on our website, have a look
http://www.seraphim.my/divinemercy/neighbour/index-neighbour.htm
Since the year 2011, we organised extra WOM visit to the poor to enhance our FFC
Sunday School Faith Formation Program. This year we are going to visit an
impoverished family living among us. DMA members have met the family a few
times and a brief write up is presented below. DMA-FFC will visit this
destitute family on Sunday 28 July, 2013. If you wish to help and/or wish to
visit this family, do contact us

A Destitute Family at the edge of Bako Village
http://www.seraphim.my/divinemercy/neighbour/index-ChaiJeeTeng.htm
The
Chai family of seven are
squatting at a run-down wooden house which was abandoned by its previous
owner. The house only offer a shelter
for this destitute family as a look around saw it is void of any furnishing
except for an obsolete 10” TV lying in the sitting room and four worn out
plastic chairs. The dividing walls seems like they are falling apart. The
backyard is a mosquito infested swampy land which is not suitable for any kind
of cultivation.
Chai
Jee Teng, aged 61
years, his wife, Voon Chiew Fung aged 55 years and five children
ranging from aged 10 years to 19 years
old live at this unnumbered house at Jalan Buda off Bako Village. The
house has electricity and rain was their source of water supply.
The
Chai family has been living in extreme poverty by the looks of it. The eldest girl, Chun Mei, 19 years old
has only completed Primary 6 education and is unemployed. Previously in 2010,
she works as a domestic worker in Kuching and was alleged to be abused
repeatedly by her employer’s mother. She
was finally rescued by her father who went to visit her at the end of
2011. It was reported that Chun Mei was
paid RM100 a month and given only one meal a day while working as a maid for
the family.
Dec
2011 KUCHING…. a meal a day, a year of abuse, teen maid finally freed (the star online)…
The
second son, Min Da, 17 years works as a mechanic near Batu Kawa and is lodging with his
employer. The third girl, Si Ying, aged 13 years is in Form 1 studying at SMK Bako. The 4th boy, Mal Sen who is 12 years old is in Primary 6 and 5th boy, Long Chin is 10 years old is in Primary
4, both studied at SJ Chung Hua Sg Buda closed to
where they live.
His
wife, Voon Chiew
Fung is a housewife and has a shy outlook and so are her children. Chai earns his living as a rubber tapper and makes about RM 7 per day. The social welfare department granted him a
monthly allowance of RM300 via his
BSN bank account. Chai used to work as a
construction labourer until an accident a few years
back, when he fell from a double storey
building. The incident had forced him to
quit the job. He now tries to provide
for his family by tapping rubber, which clearly is insufficient to pull the
family out of poverty. The family has
been getting by with only one meal a day.
The
physical scars from the abuse might have healed, but the mental wounds still
run deep for his eldest daughter, Chun
Mei. Most days, she would spend her days in the house.
A
little kindness from the Church community and friends would definitely go
a long way for this destitute family who is virtually cut off from the
society. Previously, some NGOs have come
to offer donation in terms of groceries and clothing and that has stopped
since.
