Small Wander. Chinese Small Wander: Legend.
Ju Ling Tore Open The Mountain
In our great motherland there are majestic rivers and beautiful mountains Huashan, the first amog the Five Sacred Mountains of Chine, is well-known for its awesome grandeur, usually called No 1 Perilous Under Heaven. Through the ages, innumerable sightseers have been attracted here by its charms and supreme beauty.
As the saying goes, Since time immemorial there has been only one route up Huashan. This path is narrow and almost perpendicular, with white clouds drifting aound. On either side is a fathomless abyss. At this point, all travelers can not but feel isolated from the world and left in the cold wind while enjoying the awesome beauty. People cannot help wondering how this precipitous path came to exist.
It is said in ancient time, Huashan was not what it is now. At that time, it was a bare mountain spanning the Yellow River. Being blocked, the waters soon developed into a flood causing heavy disasters to the people on either bank.
In Wei Lu of Fen Shui lived a river god called Ju Ling. He was born together with Yuan Qi(vitality), thus also named Jiu Yuan Zheng Mu. He was exceptionally tall, with superb skills and tremendous strength.
When he learned that Huashan was blocking the river course, Ju Ling came to the riverside. He decided to put his skills to good use in dredging the Yellow River.
He stretched out his giant palms of unparalled size and raised one of his immense feet of immeasurable length, and with just a kick and a wrest by both hands, suddenly there followed a tremendous crack and behold, Huashan was already split into two with a channel appearing in between.
The surging flow of the Yellow River rushed through the split Huashan rolling on in whitecups. So Yellow River no longer had to be troubled by the exhaustion in going round the bends.
Ju Lings fingerprint and footprint could still be seen left on the cliff of Huashan. For generations people came to this famous historical site to pay homage, and to show gratitude for his great help, and the supreme beauty he wrought for Huashan with his industrious and dexterous hands.
As a commemoration of Ju Lings achievements, the Emperor of Heaven promoted him to the rank of Heavenly God of Creator of Mountains and Rivers. Ju Ling went to traveling far and wide, renovating the land and dredging rivers.
