When
the Sabbath was over, Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James, and Salome
bought some spices. They wanted to go to the tomb to anoint the body of
Jesus. Early in the morning, just as the sun was rising, they came to the
tomb. Along the way they asked one another: Who will remove the stone from
the entrance to the tomb for us?
But
when they came to the grave they saw that the stone had already been rolled
aside. The women entered the tomb and saw a man clothed in white garments
sitting on the right side. They were seized with fear. But the angel said to
them: Do not be afraid! You are looking for Jesus of Nazareth who died on the
cross. He is not here. He is risen. Look, here is the place where his body
lay. Go back and tell his disciples, above all Peter, that he is going ahead
of you to Galilee. There you will see him
as he promised you. The women turned round and fled from the tomb, trembling
with awe. They told nobody about what had happened because they were afraid.
