Jesus
was praying in a lonely place. His disciples were with him. Then he asked
them: Who do people say that I am? They replied: Some say you are John the
Baptist; other say Elijah or one of the other prophets has come back. And
what about you? Asked Jesus, who do you think I am? Then Peter spoke up: We
believe that you are the Messiah, the Redeemer whom God has promised.
Jesus
forbade his disciples to tell anyone about this. He said: The Son of Man is destined
to suffer grievously. He will be rejected by the elders, the chief priests
and the scholars of Holy Scriptures. He will be put to death. But on the
third day he will be raised up again. Jesus was referring to himself.
