Jesus
went with his disciples to a town called Nain. A great number of people went
with him. As he came to the gate of the town they met a funeral procession: a
young man was being carried out for burial, the only son of his mother. She
was a widow and now she was quite alone. Her neighbours and friends were
going with her to the grave.
Jesus
saw the woman and felt sorry for her. Do not cry, he said. Then he went up
and put his hand on the bier. The bearers stood still. Jesus said to the
young man: I tell you to get up. And the dead man sat up and began to talk.
And Jesus gave him back to his mother.
All
those who were present were filled with awe and praised God, saying: A great
prophet is working among us; God himself is helping his people. The news
about what Jesus was doing for men spread throughout the land.
