Every
year Jesus’ parents went on a pilgrimage to Jerusalem for the Feast of the Passover.
When Jesus was twelve years old they took him with them. After the feast days
were over they set off home. Jesus, however, remained in Jerusalem. His parents did not
notice this. That evening they looked for him among their relatives and
friends. When they did not find him, they made their way back to Jerusalem. Theysearched for their son throughout the city.
On the third day they found him in the temple. Jesus was sitting with the
teachers of the Holy Scriptures. He was listening to them and asking
questions. Everyone was amazed at his intelligent questions and answers.
When
his parents saw him, they were overcome. His mother said to him: My child,
why have you done this? Your father and I have been searching for you. We
were very worried. Jesus replied: Why were you looking for me? Did you not
know that I belong in my Father’s house? Then Jesus returned with them to Nazareth and was obedient to
them.
