After
two years God sent Elijah to King Ahab once more. Ahab accused the prophet:
Because of you the whole people of Israel have nothing to eat!
But Elijah answered him: Not I, but you and your family are to blame for the
prolonged drought. You have deserted our God and gone running after Ball. Now
summon all the people to Mount Carmel. There it will be
decided who is the true God. King Ahab called everyone together. Not only the
prophets and priests came to Mount Carmel but also many
Israelites.
Elijah
said: Build an altar and put the beast of sacrifice on it. Then pray to your
god. Perhaps he will send down fire from heaven and accept your sacrifice. The
priests and prophets of Ball built the altar and put the sacrifice on it.
From early morning till midnight they prayed. From midday until evening they
cried out: Baal, hear us! But they called out in vain. Nothing happened.
In
the evening Elijah built an altar for the God of Israel. He put the sacrifice
on the altar and poured water over it. Then he prayed: Lord, you are the God
of Abraham, the God of Isaac and the God of Jacob. Show everyone that you are
the God of Israel and that I am your servant. Hear me, O Lord! Hear me! Then
the fire fell from Heaven. The sacrifice was burnt up. All those who saw it
were afraid. They cried out: The Lord is God! The Lord is God!Soon after clouds appeared. Rain began to
fall on the parched land.
