Soon the Pharaoh regretted letting the Israelites go. He
mustered his soldiers and charioteers and set out in pursuit of the
Israelites. The Israelites had pitched camp by the Red Sea. One of the guards saw
the cloud of dust: The Egyptians are coming! The Israelites were terrified,
for they were trapped. In from of them was the Red Sea, behind them the
heavily-armed enemy. They complained to Moses: Why did you lead us into this
disaster? We will all perish here! But Moses said: Have no fear. Today you
will witness God’s power to save.
Moses stretched out his hand over the sea
as God had commanded. An east wind sprang up. It drove back the water. The
people of Israel walked through the sea.
Men and women, daughters and sons, cattle and sheep – a great procession. The
Egyptians
came to the shore. They did not hesitate for long and plunged after the
Israelites. But the path the Israelites could take, on account of their trust
in God, became a path of death for the Egyptians. The water gushed back.
Horses, chariots, the Pharaoh’s entire army sank under the waves. The
Israelites experienced how God saves. Miriam, the sister of Moses, played the
tambourine. She danced with the women and sang the song of victory: Praise
the Lord, praise him for he is strong and mighty. He has thrown the horses
and riders into the sea.
